Stockton, CA…With nine rounds down Auburn, California’s Andy Forsberg brings the Sprint Car Challenge Tour point lead into the Stockton Dirt Track for this Saturday’s “Tribute to Roy Van Conett.”
The evening of grass roots dirt track racing on Independence Day weekend honors the late Roy Lee Van Conett, who passed away in September of 2020. Roy Lee was the son of Northern California legend LeRoy Van Conett and did spend time as a driver, however, he was most known as a crew member, Sprint Car historian and a smiling face to all.
The long-time Galt resident was always a supporter of the Stockton Dirt Track and could be seen in recent years selling popcorn under the stands with granddaughter Kailey. Roy’s positive spirit is sorely missed by all who encountered him and we look forward to remembering that on Saturday, the only way he would have wanted, at the Sprint Car races.
“We are looking forward to having the Sprint Car Challenge Tour back at the Stockton Dirt Track on Saturday,” commented track Promoter Tony Noceti. “We’ve been working hard on everything to try and improve the spectator experience with additional concession lines, tweaking the track lighting and revamping our sound system. We also honor Roy Van Conett on Saturday, who we lost far too soon. Roy was just an all-around great guy with a positive outlook on racing, and really life in general.”
Following the most recent event in Petaluma, multi-time Nor-Cal champion Andy Forsberg of Auburn has taken over the Sprint Car Challenge Tour point lead. The recently turned 46-year-old has earned a trio of podium finishes in the first nine events, including a runner up at Stockton on May 28th. Forsberg will look to park it in the unique San Joaquin County Fairgrounds victory lane on Saturday.
Modesto’s Tony Gomes is fresh off his first career SCCT win last time out and hopes to chip away at the point lead that Forsberg possesses. The current gap stands at 90-markers, however, there is still plenty of time left for the 22-year-old to try and close in. Gomes earned his initial Sprint Car triumph at the Stockton Dirt Track and another on Saturday would be beneficial to his title hopes.
Reigning Sprint Car Challenge Tour presented by Elk Grove Ford and Abreu Vineyards champ Ryan Robinson, Rio Linda’s Isaiah Vasquez and Fremont’s Shane Golobic complete the top-five going into round 10. Shane Hopkins, Dylan Bloomfield, Landon Brooks, Gauge Garcia and Jodie Robinson fill out the top-10 in the standings going into Stockton.
This Saturday is another key opportunity for drivers and teams to solidify a spot among the top-32 of points, to be eligible for the Wednesday September 7th Pacific Sprint Cup Invitational. Including this weekend there are three events remaining until the Sprint Car Challenge Tour launches the Gold Cup Race of Champions at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico.
Adult tickets this Saturday July 2nd at the Stockton Dirt Track cost $25 while seniors 65+, kids 5-12 and military cost $20. Children four and under are free. Tickets will be available at the gate on race day or online at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/360-sprint-car-challenge-tour-tri-state-pro-stocks-california-hardtops-tickets-365234836227?aff=website
The pit gate will open at 3pm, with the front grandstand gate opening at 5pm. The pit meeting will take place at 5:30pm, cars on track around 6pm with hot laps, Bianchi Farms qualifying and racing to follow.
